Why Should I Waterproof My Basement?

Basement waterproofing will probably never cross your mind if you've never had a flooding problem. It may have been a mere thought if you've ever had any small puddles enter your basement. Those of you who have had large floods are probably the only ones who have seriously considered getting a waterproof system installed. In any case, having a waterproofed basement can provide peace of mind in case anything were to happen, and requires much less work to upkeep than trying to block holes or cracks every time it rains.

You may think that using buckets and towels are easier and cheaper than spending money to get your basement waterproofed, but let's look at the facts.

Using towels, fans, and dehumidifiers with no waterproofing system will only take you so far. You will not be able to fully dry the wood or drywall in your walls and floors. This retained moisture can cause mold, which can be very detrimental to one's health. The moisture from the basement will also evaporate and rise into the rest of your home, making your living space suseptible to moisture damage and mold, also.

A wet or damp basement will cause the air in your home to be more humid. Heating and cooling humid air takes more energy, costing you more money on your energy bill.

Water damage can mean rotting wood and drywall, which can be a serious structural problem if not taken care of soon. This can be costly, and if you don't actually fix the flooding issue, everything will have to be replaced over and over again.

A waterproofed basement can be easily finished and be valuable square footage in your home! The possibilities for a finished basement are endless!

Finally, a basement with a water issue can decrease your property value. This is especially bad news if you ever plan on selling your home. It may make it more difficult to sell your home, because the next homeowner will not want to have to deal with a wet basement
