Winter is Coming: How to Prepare your home for the Winter Season

Hot, dry conditions have plagued the southeast region of the United States this summer and fall season with unusually warm temperatures and very little rainfall. According to the U.S. Drought Monitor, the East Tennessee Region is experiencing a severe to extreme drought, and conditions aren’t expected to improve until the end of this month.

What does this news mean to you as a homeowner?

With little rainfall, you might be celebrating the potential avoidance of basement or crawl space water damage. However, a more serious problem could be lurking in your foundation. Dry weather and hot temperatures can cause the soil around your concrete slab to shrink and move. This can then cause your home to settle unevenly, which could lead to cracks in your home's floors and walls, jammed or stuck doors, stuck windows and a compromised foundation

Unfortunately, colder temperatures only make conditions worse. As winter is fast approaching, it is important to assess your home's foundation problem as soon as possible.  When the ground is very cold and dry, the soil around your foundation will shrink and compress even more. When it rains, the soil will wash out, causing the void between your home's foundation and the surrounding soil to expand even more.
