It might refer to the base coat of finish on a new painting. Or it might be the masonry footings and walls that support a building. Like many metaphors, this one is often put to use without much thought to its origins or its most literal meaning. So let's take a moment to determine if the âÂÂÂÂÂÂgood foundationâÂÂÂÂÂÂ clichÃ© is as solid as it appears to be.

The foundation of a building is the stationary structural element that supports other major structural elements such as floors, walls, roofs, chimneys, porches, and decks. The foundation supports and anchors these to the ground and protects certain materials like wood and metal from ground contact that can cause moisture damage such as rot and rust.

Dead Foundation Loads

Foundation-designing structural engineers divide the âÂÂÂÂÂÂloadsâÂÂÂÂÂÂ that weigh on a foundation, into the "dead" load and the âÂÂÂÂÂÂliveâÂÂÂÂÂÂ load.

The dead load is the weight of the building itself. The buildingâÂÂÂÂÂÂs structural systems and all the materials used to build them qualify as âÂÂÂÂÂÂdeadâÂÂÂÂÂÂ load âÂÂÂÂÂÂstuff like plywood, floor joists, studs, ceiling joists, nails, rafters, roof sheathing, shingles, insulation, and gypsum board.

The âÂÂÂÂÂÂdeadâÂÂÂÂÂÂ load that bears on a foundation doesnâÂÂÂÂÂÂt change, but the âÂÂÂÂÂÂliveâÂÂÂÂÂÂ load does.

Live Foundation Load

The "live" load is the combined weight of the people who occupy the building and all the furniture, appliances, clothing and other items. The live load can also refer to the weight of snow or ice that accumulates on a buildingâÂÂÂÂÂÂs roof and sidewalls.

Other Foundation Forces

Although dead and live loads are the main forces that weigh on a typical foundation, there are other foundation âÂÂÂÂÂÂstressorsâÂÂÂÂÂÂ worth mentioning. For example, hydrostatic pressure is the pressure of water in the soil. In worst-case scenarios, hydrostatic pressure can cause a foundation wall to crack and leak; it can also push a foundation up out of the ground.

Expansive soil can also cause foundation damage. Certain types of soil with high clay content can expand with tremendous force when they become saturated with water. When this happens, the foundation experiences loading from the side, which is more likely to cause damage such as cracking and shifting.

The Durable and Long-Lasting Foundation

Just like buildings, foundations also differ in size, scale and design. A full basement foundation may have a purpose beyond just providing additional living space. Other foundations, such as crawl space foundations, slab foundations and post-and-beam foundations, cannot enclose extra living space.

The foundation makes contact with the soil under and around a building, which is why masonry materials are often used to build foundations: poured concrete, concrete blocks (technically known as concrete masonry units, or CMUs), bricks and even precast concrete panels. Unlike other building materials, masonry can be in constant contact with soil and moisture without succumbing to damage such as mold, rot, insect attack or corrosion. Masonry has the added advantage of being fireproof.

A well-constructed masonry foundation has the durability to outlast the other parts of the house that are built on top of it. When foundations become damaged and suffer deterioration, itâÂÂÂÂÂÂs often because of soil and water conditions that put pressure on foundations beyond standard dead and live loads. Soils can become saturated with water or expand with great force because of moisture saturation, as explained above. ItâÂÂÂÂÂÂs also possible for the soils that support the foundation to have poor stability or inadequate load-bearing capabilities. Fixing problems such as these usually calls for the services of an experienced foundation repair specialist.

Learn the Real Facts About Concrete and How Its Used for Foundations

Concrete is commonly misunderstood. We want to bring to light the falsities and replace such knowledge with the truth. From the difference between concrete and cement to whether concrete is impermeable. Learn the real facts, here.

Contention: "Concrete" and "cement" are two names for the same thing.

Correction: It's true that these terms are used interchangeably, but concrete and cement is not the same thing. Cement, or to be more accurate, Portland cement-- is actually an ingredient in concrete. Although additives are sometimes used to alter different handling, curing or strength characteristics, the basic ingredients of concrete never change:

7%-15% Portland cement

8% or less Air

60%-75% Coarse & fine aggregates (gravel & sand)

14%-21% Water

If you want to be accurate, say "concrete mixer" instead of "cement mixer" and "concrete sidewalk" instead of "cement sidewalk."

Contention: Curing concrete means letting it dry.

Correction: The curing process for concrete, referred to as "hydration," is more complex than simply allowing the liquid mix to dry into a solid. Hydration is a chemical reaction that bonds elements together. If concrete is allowed to dry out too quickly, bonding action diminishes, along with the strength of the concrete. That's why contractors typically find ways to keep concrete damp as it cures, ensuring optimum hydration

Contention: Reinforced concrete won't crack.

Correction: Different materials are used to reinforce concrete. Steel reinforcing bars (commonly known as "rebar") are placed in forms for poured concrete footings and walls. Strong steel wire is bedded in the mortar between courses of concrete block. Poured concrete slabs are reinforced with welded wire mesh that looks like screen fencing material. And loose fiberglass fibers are sometimes mixed into poured concrete to increase its strength. But none of these reinforcing techniques will eliminate the chance of concrete cracking if it is subjected to a great deal of force.

Concrete has exceptional compressive strength but poor tensile strength. A concrete foundation wall can accept a substantial compressive load from the structure it supports, but the same wall can crack if soil pressure outside the foundation is pushing the wall inwards (tensile load). This is why a seemingly strong, solid foundation can crack and even shift in response to soil settlement or pressure.

Contention: Concrete is impermeable.

Correction: A bowl, basement or swimming pool made from concrete will hold water. But the concrete itself will also absorb water. As the soil outside a concrete foundation becomes more and more saturated with moisture, the foundation will also become saturated and transmit this moisture to the interior, even if no visible leaks are present.

Contention: A poured concrete foundation will always be stronger and more resistant to cracking than a concrete block foundation.

Correction: Assuming proper construction techniques are used to build both foundations, there should be little difference in strength and crack resistance between the two. Concrete blocks, after all, are made from poured concrete. And a block wall can be reinforced with steel and by filling hollow block cores with concrete. When concrete block walls crack because of soil pressure or movement, cracks typically occur along the mortar joints. Poured concrete walls, on the other hand, typically show diagonal cracks that extend from foundation corners when they fail due to soil pressure.

If you don’t really know what we’re talking about, this is an annual event of race heats that benefit the Knoxville Area Rescue Ministries, otherwise known as KARM. Here are some facts, there are 20 paddlers per boat and it costs $179 per paddler. Last year raised $125,000 for KARM!

We’re hoping to help meet this year’s goal of raising $150,000 and registering 70 or more teams! Wouldn’t that be great? We sure think so!

Knoxville, TN - Master Dry, LLC is providing free basement and crawl space renovations for the twin 82-year-old Helen Ashe and Ellen Turner, founders of the local Love Kitchen charitable food donation center - as part of Labor of Love starting this Friday, March 18, 2011.

Alongside WBIR, the Home Builders Association of Greater Knoxville, and other businesses and citizens; Master Dry, LLC is providing basement and crawl space repair services in an effort to renovate the founders' homes. In fact, Master Dry, LLC has scheduled to close for March 18, 2011 in order to bring all its employees to the sisters' homes to perform the work.

Thus far, $13,500 has been collected from donations made by Charlie and Moll Anderson Family Foundation, Dean Winegardner of American Book Company, Pilot Flying J, and others. This amounts to more than a quarter of the predicted amount needed to restore and renovate the two homes, says Mike Stevens from the Home Building Association.

"I have watched these ladies for years and years and years and they've given to the community and asked nothing in return, and obviously they're not asking for this. But I can't cook and they can't fix houses, so we're going to do what we can do and let them keep doing what they do well," said Mike Stevens of the Home Builders Association for Greater Knoxville.

About the Love Kitchen

The Love Kitchen began as a dream in 1984, but quickly came to life in February 1986. Today, they provide 2,000 meals per week, offer clothing plus emergency food packages to the homeless and unemployed. The two sisters have rooted their beliefs in their religious perspectives and three important facts their father shared with them: don't take the last piece of bread since someone else might be in need of it, the human race is the only race, and the Father in Heaven is the one true Father.

After all the recent rain we've been experiencing, it's no surprise some basements are nearly destroyed. One homeowner described their basement as, 'Nasty, stinky and slimy.' These same homeowners have measured about 4-in. of rain accumulation in their basement! Wow!
