Water In Your Crawl Space?

CrawlspaceHave you ever gone into your basement or crawl space and noticed damp or humid air or a musty smell? Do you notice water spots on the floor or walls? Is water dripping or trickling? If so, you are experiencing issues with water finding its way into your basement or crawl space.

With the exception of flooding, water typically is not the cause of any damage to a home. The culprit, in fact, is water vapor entering the home through either the ground or the air.

If you have a dirt crawlspace, you have no protection against water vapor entering your home through the ground. Water builds up in the dirt in your crawlspace and can puddle there. Crawlspaces typically have poor drainage systems, if any and as a result, water has nowhere to go except to evaporate up into your home.

Another source of damaging water vapor can come from humid air. Even if your crawl space is vented, air flows in and out and can carry water vapor along with it. Warm air carries more water vapor than cold, so warm, humid air finds its way into your crawlspace through vents and is cooled once inside. As it cools, the air can hold less and less water so that excess is given off as condensation in your crawl space. This condensation can cause wood to rot and mold to thrive.

No matter the cause, water in your crawl space or basement is never a good thing. It can lead to huge problems such as home damage or even health hazards from mold growth.
